Forwarded for your information-
Hi David, and hello to all of the TASLA folks.
I'm not usually on this list but this message was brought to my attention. I manage the Library of Texas (LoT) project <LibraryofTexas.org> at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and I currently link to over 160 Texas libraries using Z39.50. 87 of those libraries allow others to download copies of their MARC records through LoT. I know from the e-mail I receive that a number of K-12 school librarians are using Library of Texas for copy cataloging to fill in gaps in the MARC data they receive from their book jobbers and other sources. We don't include many K-12 libraries in LoT but we do have El Paso ISD, a couple of school/public crossover libraries, and of course the Library of Congress which has a pretty good children's literature collection. :) Some of the larger public libraries also have excellent children's and young adult collections and can provide copy cataloging records for many titles that might be found in a K-12 library.
You don't even need to log in as a user of your local public library to search these library collections and download MARC records. Guest access is sufficient. To efficiently search for MARC records I would suggest using the "Pick Collections to Search" tab and then looking under "Special Groups" for the "MARC Record providers" group. Hit the "Apply Changes" button and then you are ready to start searching. A search for a phrase from the title like ' ti="give a moose a muffin" ' will usually pull up the desired item.
Meanwhile, I am also curious as to how many K-12 libraries are running a Z39.50 service that is accessible to the public through any local firewalls. I know that would include the Harrington Consortium member libraries but I wonder how many others might be available.
